I’m just going to start this blog post out by saying teething is for the birds! Really though, it’s miserable for everyone! If your little one is having a rough time with their new choppers trying to poke through, it can be quite painful for them. To save your tired parenting soul time so you can get back to that sweet, cranky baby, let’s just jump right into how you can help your baby (and you!) during this time!
I also want to add that what I suggest below is just what has worked for our family personally and what fits our lifestyle best. Others may do things a bit differently and/or add other remedies to this list, and that’s totally cool, too!
AMBER NECKLACES
I can’t say enough how wonderful this little piece of magical unicorn powers necklace has been for our family! When my oldest was a baby and teething, we misplaced her amber necklace for a week and I swear she was a different baby! These necklaces have worked so well for us! We get ours from Canyon Leaf. Be sure when purchasing that you get raw amber. You don’t want polished amber as the stones lose some of their healing properties. I have a whole blog post loaded with information here –Amber Necklaces 101. We keep these necklaces on 24/7 with the exception of baths or swimming.
TEETHING OIL
We’re a fan of Punkin Butt Oral Care Oil! It works well and has no junk in it. We rub on babes gums when needed.
ESSENTIAL OILS
Diluting copaiba oil with a carrier oil and rubbing this along the jawline provides your little one with relief by decreasing pain AND inflammation! Please, please, please be sure you are using 100% therapeutic grade essential oils and always diluting it before putting it on baby’s skin. I personally trust and use Young Living Essential Oils, although there are other reputable brands out there. Research before you purchase.
COLD OR FROZEN ITEMS
You don’t need the latest and greatest teething toy out there, although some are neat! Use what you have around your home already! A clean washcloth rinsed in water and popped into the freezer for some time can provide great relief for a baby’s gums! The frozen washcloth will feel great on their teeth.
Another thing that works well is celery! The ribs on the celery feels good on baby’s sore gums and the celery juices have soothing properties! Pretty cool, huh?!
Breastmilk Popsicles! Yep. It’s just as it sounds. Take breastmilk and freeze it into a popsicle mold. We know that baby can never have too much breastmilk! Plus the cold will feel great on their teeth! Is there anything breastmilk can’t solve?! Ha!
HOMEOPATHY
Boiron Camilia is great for providing soothing relief for a miserable baby, as well as belladonna.
TEETHING TOYS
Truthfully, I’m not huge into teething toys, and the only reason I say this is because babies don’t look at a toy & think “gee, this is a designated teething toy, and this one isn’t. I better only chew on the one made for teething.” If we have tiny humans, we know they chew on anything they can get their hands on.
However, for the sake of listing a couple teething toys that we’ve used and genuinely liked, here is a teething mitt (that worked well for our babe!) This may work well for your babe if they constantly are trying to chew on their hands!
We are also a fan of these vegetable shaped teething toys. They are an all natural teething toy and can also be used for sensory play.
NURSING
If you are a nursing/pumping mama, give your baby as much milk as they want. They may or may not want lots of mama’s milk while their gums hurt. But it certainly will help support their body and comfort them.
And there you have it! These are ways we, personally, are able to support our babies during the not-so-fun teething phase! I hope this helps! Let me know if you try any of these and if they work for you! If you’ve had success in the past with natural teething remedies, was there anything you’ve done that’s not on the list? Tell me!
Sending so much love and so many blessings to you, xo
Ashley
