Amber Necklaces 101

Writer's picture: Ashley ComerAshley Comer

Let’s talk about Amber Necklaces. What are they? What are they used for? Do they really work? How do they work? It’s like some voodoo, isn’t it?! Are they safe? What size do I need? Where can I order from? Burning questions I’ve heard from so many mama’s! (& daddies! I ain’t leaving you men out!)

What is an Amber Necklace?

An Amber Necklace is usually made up of Baltic Amber. Baltic Amber is fossilized tree resin from the sap of Conifer trees. Although other forms of Amber exist, Baltic Amber is known for having higher levels of succinic acid. Succinic acid is the “secret” to these necklaces!  An amber necklace, which comes in many more forms than just necklaces (earrings, bracelets & anklets) are generally used by parents, for infants, to aid their littles mouths when they start the (dun.. dun.. dun..!) teething phase! Dreaded by all, beloved by none. Kidding!! It really isn’y that bad. Amber jewelry has many more health benefits other than to aid teething, though! It can help relieve all kinds of aches & pains from headaches, to asthma, arthritis, eczema, speed up wound healing, sore throats and so much more, without any side effects!

How does it work?

When you wear the amber jewelry, your body heat warms it, causing it to release oils containing succinic acid, which is absorbed through your skin. Succinic Acid is an ingredient found in medications/creams for various ailments of the body. In Chinese medicine, baltic amber is a common active ingredient! The most obvious/well known reasons for Amber’s effectiveness for teething babies is that it’s an anti-inflammatory (reduces tenderness, fever, swelling, pain & red cheeks) and stimulates the thyroid glands (controls drooling.)

What are Amber necklaces used for?

  1. teething babies (this is the most common answer)

  2. headaches

  3. asthma

  4. arthritis

  5. rheumatism

  6. aching muscles and joints

  7. anxiety

  8. wound healing

  9. reduces inflammation in ears, throat, stomach and respiratory system

  10. boosts immune system

  11. and more!

Where can I buy an Amber Necklace?

There are so many on the market, but this does NOT mean they’re all real! To get the best and most beneficial amber jewelry, these are the things you want to look for: unpolished, raw, certificate of authenticity. It’s believed that the lighter color of the amber,  the more pain relieving it is. If you put your amber against your skin, as it heats, it should smell a very faint smell of pine.

Here is a list of credible sellers:

  1. Baltic Wonder

  2. Canyon Leaf (BOHEMIANMAMA for 15% off your order. I receive no profit from this- we just love this brand so much!)

  3. Baltic Essentials

  4. R.B. Amber & Sons

What size should I get?

This one totally varies by baby. Some babies are smaller, while some larger than others. Always measure yourself/your baby to get the best fit. You want it snug enough that it doesn’t slip over the chin but loose enough that its (obviously) not choking you/baby.

Does my baby chew on it?

No! Chewing on the necklace isn’t how you receive the benefits and could be dangerous. You want to be sure to keep the jewelry free of your baby’s mouth. The amber stones, should they come off the necklace, could be a choking hazard.

Are Amber Necklaces Safe?

Amber Necklaces are not a safety concern considering the jewelry fits properly (not too tight, not too loose) and the child isn’t left unattended with it on. As with all things, use your discretion. Some parents let their children sleep in their necklaces while others feel it is a risk. I cannot tell you that you are right or wrong in either way, especially considering I let my children sleep in them, and I, myself, sleep in mine. Safety is generally going to come down to the user/guardian. Most necklaces made for babies have a breakaway clasp that should anything get snagged, the necklace will come off with no problem and the amber stones are double knotted to ensure they can’t go anywhere easily.

How do I care for my Amber Necklace?

The amber stones can get wore down if not cared for properly. It is always best to remove jewelry before baths, showers, swimming (pools, lakes, oceans, rivers.) It’s also beset for the longevity and effectiveness of your amber jewelry if soaps, lotions, etc. aren’t used on the stones. Amber Necklaces can be “charged” in the sun- the heat from the sun helps the oils emerge again. If your necklace gets dirty, run a damp washcloth over it & let it dry in the sun.

What age can my baby wear an Amber Necklace?

Anytime! Remember that since a newborn has a smaller neck, finding a good fit may be a challenge. For this reason, some parents wait until their baby is a bit older (3 or so months) or shows signs of teething.

I’ll make a blog post about hazelwood necklaces at some point soon(ish!) These are especially helpful for babies who suffer from reflux! Once I write the blog, I’ll update –> here <– with it!

So many blessings,

Ashley – xo
